"Disentangling Text and Math in Word Problems" was accepted at Findings of ACL 2025.
Led by Pedro Calais, this paper asks whether LLMs treat text and mathematics as one skill or two. By separating the reading step from the equation-solving step, we find a bidimensional structure in model reasoning: small models struggle far more with interpreting the text than with solving the math.
